Administrative Assistant: Wharton Borough, Morris County, NJ

Schedule: Full-Time (35 hours/week | Monday–Friday, 8:30 AM – 4:30 PM)

Salary: $40,000 – $51,000/year (commensurate with experience)

Position Overview Wharton Borough is seeking a dependable, organized, and public-facing Administrative Assistant. This role serves as a key point of contact for the community, providing crucial clerical, organizational, and customer service support across Borough Departments. The ideal candidate thrives in a fast-paced environment and excels at multi-channel communication, website management, and public engagement.

Key Responsibilities

  • Customer Service & Operations: Answer incoming phone calls, greet and assist residents in person, maintain the Borough's main email account, and handle daily administrative tasks. Requires exceptional verbal and written communication skills with a proven ability to interact tactfully and diplomatically with residents, staff, and Borough Officials.
  • Digital & Print Media: Manage website content and social media platforms (creation and posting); compile and design the Mayor’s Newsletter and the annual town calendar. Technical proficiency with Gmail, Google Calendar, Microsoft Word, Excel, and Canva, or other internet-based platforms is required.
  • Board of Health Licensing Secretary: Manage pet licensing and organize the annual Free Rabies Clinic.
  • Departmental Support: Provide general administrative assistance to various Borough Departments and leadership as needed.

Qualifications & Skills

  • Preferred Experience: Knowledge of Spatial Data Logic (SDL), MSI, or Edmunds software is a plus, but not required.
  • Language Skills: Bilingual in Spanish is a strong preference.

Wharton is a community of approximately 7,346 residents in the highlands of Morris County. Wharton is located between Routes 15, 46 and 80, stretching south from the main entrance of Picatinny Arsenal, a major army research and development center, to Route 46 abounded on the west by Roxbury Township and the east by Dover and Rockaway Township. The Borough is approximately 2.2 square miles.

Town Hall is open until 7:30 p.m the second Thursday of the month (except for certain election weeks) and closes at 12:30 p.m. on the second Friday of the month.
